The Sine And Moon Story

Following on from ‘The Twirligig Story’: http://jontidanimals.tumblr.com/post/11590549540

Wattup! Sine And Moon is an anthology of recordings i did until last year. I first made it as a podcast, and then i kept getting hit up for the original tracks so i wanted to give them away for free. so i did in form of the album: http://jontidanimals.tumblr.com/post/16322340611 The response to that was so cool and im forever grateful for it. So for those who liked the album, Peanut Butter Wolf has no put it on vinyl or you to enjoy all with remastered goodness (Thanks Kelly Hibbert)

Every song is a document, story or experiment. It could be about love/immigration/loneliness or even telling stories about fighting robots or confused birds. And to celebrate the vinyl release, heres a few anecdotes about making each song:

Saturday Night Songs

lil me was 13 yrs when I did this. I just moved to Australia from South Africa and didn’t have many friends yet so i stayed at home on a Saturday Night with the ukelele and recorded this song. I had also just gotten into Beach Boys and liked the idea that this fun music could be a companion. And theres a Ukelele solo! I perform this at shows now too. Girls react funny to it.

Red On Green ft. Jonwayne -

This was circa 2007… meaning Jonwayne was 17 yrs old! Whats even crazier was this was just a random myspace collaboration from across the globe. Before I was doing stuff as Danimals, and before Jon was Low End Theory master. Little did I know Jon would land up on Stones Throw too and become a good friend who was instrumental to making me welcome in LA. Funnily enough, Wayniac actually hates this song now ha, but i still love it. The moment at 1:57 is probably my favourite moment of my music to date.

Confused Birds -

This song is about a bird who makes a decision to not fly in sync with the flock of birds he’s grown up with. ‘you chase the wind, Ill lose my mind’

Nagoya Train Station 3AM

I set a loop on the sp-303 drum machine, closed my eyes and recorded the synths of top. I know smokers like this one.

Nightshift In Blue

I heard a lick on a Dave Brubeck record, it blew my mind because it was so cold! I looped it and wrote Nightshift around it. This version is a much simpler version in terms of textures and mixing and has diff vocals.

Koi Moon’s Daughter Pt.II

My friend Will Russell is a maestro on the marimba. I played in a band with him called Sherlock’s Daughter. After one rehearsal i recorded him freestyling and made a little piece around it. It was when Radiohead released In Rainbows and that was mad influential to me then.

By This Shore

I love those Woody Allen movies where there in a super beautiful location with some romantic drama and theres a humorous eery vibe. I was just trying to create that. The second half was inspired by Japanese group Lullatone. I hit them up on myspace and Shawn told me that his favourite sine waves are the ones recorded onto cassette. So i made a little sine piece on a boombox.

Flesh Of Morning

I really loved this song but didn’t think anyone would take it seriously. In my teen years, I never had been to like a crazy fun party with friends and did stupid shit like id seen in movies. This was just dreaming of the perfect party. It turned out to be the track everyone liked most. When I was in the studio with Hodgy Beats, he was initially gonna use ‘Nagoya Train Station..’(which is why that was called ‘Nagoya’), but i played him this one, and he was instantly like ‘nah this is the one we gotta do’. So we did it and it helped so much. S/O to OF dudes and to Graeme ‘G-Funk’ Pillemer for playing Rhodes Bass. A version of this is on Tokorats.

Lost Machines

Lost Machines is about a Robot who is in a completely organic environment and feels he doesn’t fit in. And he’s lonely and wants love. Throughout the course of the song he makes it home and finds a community of robots and robot love. Thats why it starts with acoustic guitar, then goes into an electric guitar jam and then finally when the voice turns into a robot voice at 1:10 it breaks out into a fully computerised, electronic, quantised jam. Which is his home. I liked that song a lot.

Young Wildebeest -

This is actually a cover of Bobo On The Corner by the Beastie Boys. I had a drumkit for a week and that was the first song i learned. Thank you so much to the Beasties for all the inspiration and Rest.In.Beats Nathaniel Hornblower. Your legacy as an artist and human being is untouchable. I got to play this to Mike D too which was really exciting

Moon Goddess -

This is about Erykah Badu. Im probably just gonna leave it at that…

Sugar High -

My mind: ‘What would happen if Panda Bear and Flying Lotus made a song really hyped up on sugar’

Lovers Stone

I have my 3 dollar Kalimba from Kenya. Its so peaceful i love to play it! I made this song on it. I remember it was such a beautiful day in Sydney that i recorded the birds outside and chopped em in there. I remember feeling so much peace, acceptance and calmness at the time. And of course purity. Im grateful that all these moments could be captured with a microphone to be forever immortalised.

Sine And Moon is a silly play on the sun and the moon. And the Sine wave is the purest tone possible, a smooth wave without overtones. I was obsessed with purity and i record music almost everyday just to document how i age and how events have effected me. I found these old photo’s of when i was doing this stuff, i would take clear vinyl sleeves and draw on them to pretend like they were my own records like this. (It says ‘Danimals’ because thats what i wanted to call myself in those days)

So to see these recordings come to life on there own vinyl release is a wicked dream come true! I hope you all enjoy it

Man saw you play first time with Peanut Butter Wolf beginning of 2011 and have been listening ever since. Also, watching the ADSR feature was a great insight into your production and the way you push the envelope. Thanks for the music, thanks for repping Sydney, we'll keep listening if you keep creating!

That means alot my dude! That was my first solo show under the name ‘Jonti Dan’ glad you could be apart of it
